Understanding Dog Reactivity: Why Your Dog Reacts and How to Help

Reactivity is one of the most common behavioural challenges that dog owners face, yet it remains one of the most misunderstood. A reactive dog is not necessarily an aggressive dog. Reactivity is, at its core, an emotional response – often rooted in fear, frustration, or a lack of confidence – that manifests as barking, lunging, or growling at triggers such as other dogs, strangers, cyclists, or vehicles.

Understanding why your dog reacts is the first and most important step towards addressing the behaviour. Many reactive dogs have had limited socialisation during their critical developmental window, typically between three and fourteen weeks of age. Others may have experienced a traumatic encounter that has left a lasting negative association with a particular trigger. In some cases, genetics and breed predisposition also play a significant role.

One of the most damaging misconceptions is that a reactive dog is being dominant or deliberately disobedient. In reality, the dog is overwhelmed. Their nervous system has been pushed beyond a threshold at which they can think clearly or respond to commands. This is why punishment-based approaches so often make reactivity worse rather than better – they add further stress to an already overloaded dog.

At Train Your Dog, we work with reactive dogs in real-world environments across England and Wales, addressing the root cause of the behaviour rather than simply suppressing the symptoms. Using reward-based methods, we help dogs build new, positive associations with their triggers whilst teaching owners to read their dog's body language and manage threshold distances effectively.

Every session is conducted one-to-one and video recorded, so owners can review their progress and reinforce what they have learned at home. With the right guidance, even highly reactive dogs can make remarkable and lasting improvements.
