Group training classes have their place, particularly for puppies learning basic socialisation and foundational obedience in a controlled setting. However, for the vast majority of dogs presenting with behavioural challenges – reactivity, aggression, recall failure, or complex anxiety-based issues – one-to-one training is not simply preferable, it is essential.
The reason is straightforward. Group classes are designed around a generalised curriculum delivered to multiple dogs and owners simultaneously. The trainer's attention is divided, the environment is artificially controlled, and the specific needs of your individual dog are rarely addressed in meaningful depth. For a reactive dog, the presence of other dogs in a group class can actively reinforce the very behaviour you are trying to resolve.
One-to-one training, by contrast, is built entirely around your dog. The programme is tailored to your dog's specific triggers, history, temperament, and learning style. Sessions take place in real-world environments – the park where your dog lunges at cyclists, the street where recall breaks down, the doorstep where your dog reacts to visitors – meaning that the skills learned are immediately applicable to your everyday life.
At Train Your Dog, every session is conducted on a strictly one-to-one basis across England and Wales. We involve owners at every stage, because the most important factor in long-term success is not what the trainer can get the dog to do – it is what the owner can achieve independently once the trainer has gone home.
Sessions are video recorded as standard, giving you a permanent reference point to revisit techniques and monitor your dog's progress over time. Whether you are dealing with a minor training issue or a complex behavioural case, one-to-one training provides the depth, focus, and flexibility that group classes simply cannot match.
